About Me

A/Prof Gregory Miles Cario is a highly experienced gynaecological surgeon with over 20 years experience in advanced laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery and the management of related women’s health conditions. He operates several times weekly, offering patients the choice of laparoscopic surgery or advanced robotic surgery under the da vinci robotic system. Greg was born at Cronulla and has resided in the St George area for most of his life. His primary education was at Kingsgrove and Hurstville schools and secondary education at Kingsgrove High School. He then entered Sydney University to study medicine. He graduated with Honours and proceeded to do his residency and specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology at St George Hospital and Canterbury Hospital before transferring to London on rotation from St George Hospital to complete his senior registrar training working at Charing Cross, West London and West Middlesex Hospitals. In the United Kingdom, A/Prof Cario developed a keen interest in the investigation and treatment of urinary incontinence. On returning from the United Kingdom, A/Prof Cario took up a position as Lecturer at the University of New South Wales and a Visiting Medical Officer at Bankstown Hospital and St George Hospital. He set up the first Urodynamics Centre in Sydney’s South in 1985 and began a long commitment to the investigation and treatment of female incontinence and pelvic floor prolapse. In 1990 A/Prof Cario attended the first Australian workshop in hysteroscopic surgery and soon after the first workshop in laparoscopic surgery and became a founding member, and later director of the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society (AGES). He has continued this pursuit of minimally invasive endoscopic or keyhole techniques as they apply to the female pelvis and pelvic floor in particular. In 1996 he helped establish the Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre (SWEC) as a Director. This Unit, which is affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St George Hospital and the University of New South Wales, has a full-time Research Fellow attached to it. It also provides workshops for teaching visiting surgeons from all over the world and in particular Australia and the Asia Pacific regions. This revolutionary laparoscopic surgery has now almost replaced open surgery for all gynaecological conditions including some cancer surgery. Since its inception, SWEC has become one of the leading units in Australia and Asia and regularly hosts interstate and overseas experts. The unit has in fact received two international awards at the American Association of Gynaecologic Laparoscopists and Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons in the past few years for the quality of its research. This expertise is available in very few units in Australia. A/Prof Cario lectures and operates Master Classes in laparoscopic surgery throughout Australia and overseas. He has helped establish international laparoscopy centres in countries like Saudi Arabia and India where he is a regular visiting surgeon. A/Prof Cario is married, has 4 children and is a dedicated family man who is heavily involved in school activities. His interests include medical teaching in third world countries, travel and all sports including golf and football. He is also heavily involved in charity work for juvenile diabetes, which affects one of his children.

Social
My main interests are in sports and travel. In my younger years I competed competitively in soccer at first division amateur level. I was also active in tennis and squash but now confine myself to social play. I am an avid golfer and as a spectator I enjoy all sports.

I travel extensively throughout the world, both academically and socially. I have an interest in both ancient and modern history and have toured the classical sites of Egypt, Greece and Rome.

I enjoy all types of cuisine and have been a member of a gourmet Club for some years.

Teaching
I began my postgraduate teaching career soon after my return from the UK in 1985 when I took up the position of Lecturer in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Bankstown hospital through the University of NSW. This involved largely teaching undergraduates and RMOs. I was also the local College Training Supervisor for the registrars for 10 years before I moved to St George where I have continued to teach. Thereafter I turned my attention to post fellowship training although I still continue to teach registrars, RMOs and undergraduates and nurses.

Over the last 18 years I have worked to establish a reputation both nationally and internationally for innovation and teaching of advanced laparoscopic surgery. This has been achieved through the Australian and overseas surgeons who have participated in the workshops and also the fellows from within Australia and the wider medical community overseas. We have just finished our 50th major workshop since 1996 (around 380 participants) and at present we are training our 16th fellow in laparoscopic surgery. These fellows come the UK, Ireland, Israel, India, Asia, Saudi Arabia, USA and from all states in Australia. These connections have allowed my colleagues, fellows and I to present original research at Laparoscopic meetings all around the world and to win prizes against major opposition. It has also resulted in me performing Master classes in Australia and being on the faculty of other renowned Endoscopic units in Australia.

I have been lucky enough to be asked to perform workshops and surgery overseas in the UK, India on 5 occasions, Saudi Arabia, China, Singapore, Pakistan, and the Philippines. I am currently preparing an international collaboration based on SWEC surgeons that will involve me carrying the SWEC formula with workshops in many of these countries. This is already allowing us to have an international collaboration with these units to perform multicentre trials.

My position on the board of the Australian Gynaecological Society has allowed me to further my national and international recognition and also help set many of the training guidelines for doctors entering this unofficial subspecialty area that of course runs across all the subspecialty areas. As a board member I was also on the faculty and organizing committee for all of the

AGES meetings over recent years. I also helped run one of the first registrar workshops in laparoscopic surgery. This is now and annual event.

I am presently on the AGES Research Grants Committee and the AGES Education Committee where we are setting up a new AGES endorsed Australia wide fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery which will result in a Diploma or Masters in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery.

My future direction will be in the area of Robotic Surgery which I believe will be the future of all surgery. In keeping with my passion for innovation and teaching I want to introduce this rapidly to SWEC as soon as funding can be arranged so that SWEC can continue as a major force in teaching advanced gynaecological surgery for some time to come.

Clinical Experience
In the UK I enjoyed a secondment to Stuart Stanton at the Urogynaecology Unit at St George’s Hospital. He showed me how to perform Burch Colposuspension and I worked with the fellow to become proficient at Urodynamics. I subsequently set up the first Urodynamic service at The West Middlesex hospital which still continues to this day.

Following my return from the UK and my VMO appointment in 1985 I founded the St George Urodynamic Centre providing the only Urodynamic service in Sydney South.

Following on from this I developed and interest in Endoscopic Surgery, attending the first workshop in hysteroscopic surgery and laparoscopic surgery in Australia.

In 1991 I embarked on my first laparoscopic hysterectomy. Not long after this I followed my interest in pelvic floor surgery to perform a laparoscopic Burch colposuspension in 1992, which I believe to be the first time it was successfully performed in Australia. At that time I set up an Endosurgery Unit at Hurstville Community Hospital and was asked to join Sydney’s first Gynaecological Endoscopy group at Liverpool Hospital. I began performing animal workshops and lecturing in laparoscopic surgery at major meetings throughout Australia.

In 1995 I was the co-founder of the Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre (SWEC). It has subsequently become the major Endosurgery Training Centre in Australia both at postgraduate and post-consultant level. Because of the extensive research facilities and the Research Fellows associated with the Unit, we have been able to publish widely both in Australia and internationally.

I have presented major work in Endosurgery in Australia, Europe and America. I have received an Award at the Seattle meeting of the A.A.G.L. in 1997 for my presentation of “The Learning Curve for Laparoscopic Hysterectomy”.

This was judged one of the best papers presented at the Meeting. In December 1998 at the International Meeting for the Society of Laparoscopic Surgeons, we were once again successful in presenting a paper on “Venous return during laparoscopic surgery” which was judged the best gynaecological paper in endoscopy presented at that meeting.

I have also preceptored doctors in almost every state in Australia over many years to teach Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Pelvic Floor Reconstruction and the fundamentals of Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. I have been invited to perform surgery throughout Asia, the Middle East and in the UK. I have operated at 2 International Master classes in Brisbane and 3 Laparoscopic Workshops in Adelaide and I am on the faculty of a number of units in Australia. I am on the AGES Education subcommittee to formulate a nationally recognised fellowship training program which will result in a Diploma or Master of Surgery similar to the UK model.

My interests have been involved with the use of the Harmonic Scalpel and the laparosonic coagulating shears in its application to total laparoscopic hysterectomy and pelvic floor surgery. In association with the Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre, we have worked towards creating a new approach to pelvic floor reconstruction and bladder neck suspension. This Unit is one of the main Units in the world in relation to laparoscopic treatment of pelvic floor disorders.

I have recently been certified as a Robotic surgeon in the USA and have started a Robotic surgery centre in association with Sydney Women’s Endosurgery Centre (SWEC) at Macquarie University Hospital and Hurstville Private Hospital.
